Nick pushed the pram as a proud father while kate walked by his side. the sun shone and sparkled off the ring on her finger as they walked to the door which was being held open for them by a stranger. once inside nick stayed with lilly and kate followed the vet into a room. tail wagging face smiling and ears pricked up high was the sight that waited for her. levi was on a leash but that didnt hold him back as he pulled the assistant with him to greet his friend. his wound wasnt too bad and he was making a full recovery. glad to be going home levi jumped up at kate and greeted her with a big wet sloppy kiss right across her face.
jack met them back at the car, he had his right arm in a sling and had gone for the paper. the front page bore the title blind justice. it told the story of how a lawyer frank hamilton had turned states evidence against a very influential drug lord, the drug lord had killed frank and his wife. he had tried to kill their daughter who in the incident had lost her sight but still managed to get the upper hand on him. it also congratulated kate and nick walker on the birth of their daughter and on their wedding. jack handed the paper to kate, she took a look at the paper and instead of reading it she threw it in the bin next to the pavement. nick and jack both looked at her and she looked them in the eyes and said "i dont need to read it, ive survived it and now its time to get on with our life".

part 8
kate heard voices and when she opened her eyes she was surprised to see blurry images. the images began to get clearer but still fuzzy. "shes awake" said the familiar voice of sarah. the fuzzy images came closer and kate recognised them as people first she saw a woman that must be sarah and a man that must have been jonny as he was dirty with what smelt like oil. "lilly" kate asked. "she is fine shes here" said sarah. "nick" she asked for next. "nick is ok he is resting just now he was injured but is going to be ok" sarah told her. the doctor came in and checked kate over. "it looks as though that bump to the head has knocked something back into place" he said as he was shining a torch into kates eyes. she was given the all clear but was being kept in over night.

jack told them to stay where they were and he went to investigate. levi went with him then noticed that jessica wasnt going too so he returned to her side. jack didnt find anyone and said it was clear so they headed to the dorr and when jack opened it he was shot. jack flew backwards into the hall and nick pushed jessica into the kitchen. levi was barking and ran towards the shooter. there was another bang and levi whined as he hit the floor. nick told kate to stay there then he went to help jack. the gun man was gone but nick didnt know where. checking for a pulse he found that jack was still alive. the gun man apeared in the door way next to him. he must have been checking the living room. instinct took over and nick lunged at the man and fought for the gun. they punched and kicked at eachother. the gun was knocked free and slid into the kitchen doorway. levi had crawled back to kate and had dropped something heavy on her knee. she felt it was the gun and she called out for nick but he didnt answer. it all went quiet and levi growled again. the voice she recognised from that night "he cant help you now". she panicked and pointed the gun but wasnt sure where he was. not wanting to shoot at the walls and waste bullets she waited. "the police are on their way" she toyed with him trying to get him to speak and give away his location. nothing she couldnt hear him could he be creeping towards her or is he staying still hoping that im going to waste bullets she thought to herself. she could smell his cologne and instantly she pointed the gun and fired one shot. the bang was so loud she had to wait till she could concentrate to hear if she got him. she waited too long he grabbe the gun from her and they struggled. he pulled her to her feet and the struggle continued. he hit her so hard that she fell back against the bench hitting her head and falling to the ground. just before she blacked out she heard the gun go off. her last thought was this is it she was going to die.

the next day jessica went about her usual routine but today she had lilly with her strapped to her chest in a baby carrier. maggie met them as usual and oohhed and ahhed over baby lilly. levi got his muffin and jessica got her coffee. "so did you like your surprise" asked maggie. "yes i did, wait you know about it" jessica replied. "sarah made me promise not to tell you" maggie appologised.
that afternoon after going to the park and visiting sarah they walked home. they turned the corner and levi barked which jessica knew ment that jonny was waiting for them. jonny owned the garage and sarah ran the business side of it leaving him do get his hands dirty. other than jessica, jonny was levis best friend. they greeted eachother and then went inside. levi was released of his duties for now and greeted jonny in his own way by jumping up and giving him a big sloppy kiss. "im just going to put lilly down for her napp and ill meet you in the kitchen" she told him and went upstairs. jonny headed to the kitchen and put the kettle on then fed levi. jonny had been poping round every lunch time just to check that she was ok. they were good neighbours going above and beyond to help out. they sat and had a cup of tea and a chat before jonny left to go to work again.
it was now quiet so jessica decided to have a soak in the tub. she had just settled into the water and the cd had begun to play when she heard the front door slamm and sarah shouting for her. "jess, where are you" she screamed. "im in the tub ill be right there but shh lilly is sleeping" she called back. getting out and dried jessica put on a robe and went down to see what was going on. "whats wrong" she asked as she joined sarah in the kitchen. "he is here in town" she replied through puffs and pants. "who" jessica asked but she knew. "nick he was asking about you in the clover and maggie told him where you live" she continued still out of breath. " come on you need to get dressed and look great" sarah ushered her back upstairs. "i need to get out of here" jessica replied but sarah was having none of it. they had finally gotten dressed when there was a knock at the door. "do you want me to stay or not" sarah asked. "can you stay please" jessica asked her friend. they slowly headed down stairs and answered the door.
jessica opened the door and said hello. "kate" nick said oh how she had missed that name but mostly to hear him say it. "nick what are you doing here" she wanted to know. "i missed you so much" he said then he kissed her so passionatly she almost lost the use of her legs her knees felt so weak she had to sit down. "kate i never thought i could feel like this so fast i mean we only knew each other a few days but im in love with" he proclaimed. "really" was all she could say with a dry throat. "with all my heart" he told her. "im so in love with you too nick" she admitted " but its too dangerous" she added. they sat and talked for a while. the phone rang and sarah answered it, told jessica that it was her uncle dan. both jessica and nick knew she didnt have a uncle dan. jessica took the phone and the color washed from her face. she told her uncle that she wasnt alone and told him who was with her. then she kept saying yes aha yes. when she finally hung up she said to sarah "take lilly to yours and look after her please" "sure, is everything ok" sarah asked. "not now ill tell you later but please get her out of here" jessica replied. sarah ran upstairs and got the baby then left. nick and jack both stood looking confused. "lilly" nick asked. "our daughter" she said. nick was silent for a moment. "we can deal with that later nick but right now we need to get out of here the man who shot my parents is missing and he was last seen a few towns over" she explained. they headed to the front door when levi began to growl

Jessica was walking down the street with levi a big black and tan german shepherd, when she was stopped by the owner of the clover cafe. maggie was a plumpish woman in her mid fifties and every morning she would greet jessica and levi at the door so that she didnt trip over any tables and chairs. along with her morning coffee levi would also get his bowel of water and a muffin. he didnt really like the chocolate ones but watch your hands when there was a blueberry one in sight. "morning you two" maggie said. levi was always glad to see her and would show it with exstattic tail wagging but he never stepped out of line when on duty. he was good at his job. "how are you today" maggie would ask every day. as every day jessica replied "im fine". maggie helped jessica to the stool at the counter and settled levi for his brunch before getting the coffee. "so what are you up to today then" maggie asked. "sarah is meeting us here and taking me shopping as i need new clothes apparently" jessica informed her. levi was too busy polishing off hi muffin to pay any attention. "your brave going shopping whit sarah she will have you out all day now that girl can shop" maggie teased.
it wasnt long before sarah arrived like a whirlwind she burst through the door with her booming voice " are you ready for some serious retail therapy". jessica almost spilt her coffe but she was getting used to sarah now after nine months. she was even getting used to answering when her name was called. after three months she had even getting used to being blind. she could hear better, smell things she normally wouldnt be able to. her hands became her eyes, it was true your other senses do kick in to pick up the slack.
maggie asked sarah if she was shopping for anything paticular as she poured another coffee. "well i need a present for jonny for his birthday and jessica will be buying the new nick walker album as usual" she went on. "i know your a fan but you never miss a release or any programes he is on". she continued. jessica just drank her coffee if only they knew she smiled to herself. "its such a shame though, all his songs are for this woman he is in love with but cant have for some unknown reason" maggie began " why doesnt she just put him out of his mysery if she isnt going to be with him" she said. "well time to go" jessica said then called for levi who instantly was by her side. shee took his lead and off they went.
on the way home sarah turned on the radio and put on the cd that jessica had bought. yet again it was another love song. "ive got a surprise for you but im not telling you what" sarah told jessica. no matter how much begging jessica did she knew she wouldnt get any information from her friend. "i want you to wear that outfit you got today and be ready tomorrow at five" sarah told her then continued " dont worry about lilly jonny will look after her and levi". she didnt lke surprises but the last one wasnt so bad because she got lilly so she just went with the flow.
the next day jessica was ready on time and sarah and jonny arrived and jessica was dragged out of the house and led to the car. levi tried to follow but jessica just turned to him and told him "sorry boy your on the bench this this time". levi lay on the curb and grumped.
it took them a while to get there and it was now seven pm. jessica heard alot of voices, too many to pick up any conversations. they stood in a que for a while but sarah wouldnt say where they were. they eventually walked down a slope and found seats. "are you going to tell me now" jessica asked. "ok ok ill tell you" sarah gave in " we are at a consert". "who is playing" jessica asked. but before she got an answer from her friend the music started and she knew. it was nick. thoughts running through her head. the FBI had told her no contact but he wouldnt see her would he? "its nick walker and we got front seats ". sarah shouted over the music. panic rushed over jessica. no he wouldnt recognise her she looked different now and it was dark in places like this she thought so she relaxed and listened to him. singing the songs he wrote for her so she knew how he felt she could hear the pain in his voice. she knew that pain because she felt the same. sarah took jessicas hand and told her to come with her. they climbed a few steps. "where are we going" she asked. "we get to go on the side of the stage for ten minuites in groups it will be so much fun" sarah told her. " no i dont want to go, get me out of here please" she begged. but it was too late they were ushered forwards and he was headding over. she panicked over nothing he didnt recognise her. and as he stopped for a ten minute break they headded off the stage. nick noticed sarah helping jessica down the stepps. that is when he took a good look and saw her. he shouted "kate" but she ignored himbut not before jumping at hearing him call her name.
nick told jack to go and give them backstage passes as he was taken off stage for the band to play. jack rushed over and stopped them. he handed the passes to sarah and told her they were a special request from nick. he looked at kate but didnt say anything. they went back to their seats. "can you believe this" sarah was giddy with excitement. "i cant go back there can you please get me out of here" jessica pleaded. "why whats wrong" sarah began to get worried. sarah gave in and they left through the side door into the corridoor. "i cant tell you why but please i cant see him" jessica told her friend. nick had been watching from the the back of the stage and he and jack followed them. they didnt catch up with them in time but nick memorised the number plate.
back in the car "ok you need to tell me why we ran away from the sexiest man alive, but dont tell my husband i said that" sarah asked. "you deserve to know but you have to swear not to tell anyone" jessica told her. "cross my heart" sarah said then got ready for the truth. jessica told her about everything and when she had finished sarah replied "is that all. i thought you were shy". it lightned the mood but telling her had lifted a weight off jessicas shoulders. "hang on, so your the woman he is singging to" jessica confirmed with a yes. "ohh how romantic" sarah said. the rest of the way home the spoke of how things got to where they are. kate let her hand slid up to play with his tousled sand brown almost blonde hair but to her it was just soft and silky. the electric surging through her body had nothing to do with her injuries but more to do with how he was making her feel, alive.
the nurse had to show her identification to the officer at the door before she was allowed to enter kates room. once inside she turned on the dim light and saw kate asleep in the bed and nick asleep in the chair by her side. she thought it was sweet as they were still holding hands. nick heard her and woke up. he slowly took his hand back and asked the nurse what time it was. "its eight am" she whispered. nick rubbed his eyes and got up to stretch. "its time for breakfast" she told him and handed him the news paper she had in her hand. "i think you may want to read this before she wakes up" the nurse said to him. kate stirred but didnt wake. nick motioned to the nurse to go outside and the quietly left the room. in the hall the nurse asked nick how she was doing. "shes hanging in there shes a fighter" he told her. " yeah well she has taken a shine to you" the nurse replied. "shes growing on me too" nick said if only she knew he thought as he rubbed his neck with his hand out of stiffness but more out of his own embarasment. "its good she has some one to talk to just now" the nurse told him. kate called his name how he liked the way she said his name.
nick had bought kate some flowers today to cheer her up. he couldnt beleive how he felt about her after only meeting her a few days ago. there was no officer at the door when he got out of the lift. stopping at kates door he was about to knock when he heard someone calling his name. it was one of the nurses he had came to know called marge, a lovely woman in her late forties. "nick, shes not here im sorry" she told him. "where is she" nick asked. "they took her last night" she told him with sorrow in her voice. "who took her, where" he questioned. "the FBI" she said. "already, we didnt get to say goodbye" he said not really to marge but just out loud. "she gave me this to give to you" she said as she reached into her pocket and handed him a letter. nick gave marge the big bunch of pink lilies "maybe you could use these" he told her. marge thanked him and then left him to read the letter. sitting down he began to read.
nick, im so sorry that we didnt get to say goodbye. i want to thankyou for being there for me and i want you to know that ill never forget you. hey, ill listen to all of your music and remember. if you have a consert near me ill go but they say im not allowed to have any contact with my past and that includes you now. why couldnt we have met afterwards... these last few days have ment so much to me aand i cant even tell anyone that i fell for nick walker, it is our little secret we will share for all our life. we will always have the memories of that night you saved me, i will never forget.

"she gave me this to give to you" she said as she reached into her pocket and handed him a letter. nick gave marge the big bunch of pink lilies "maybe you could use these" he told her. marge thanked him and then left him to read the letter. sitting down he began to read.
nick, im so sorry that we didnt get to say goodbye. i want to thankyou for being there for me and i want you to know that ill never forget you. hey, ill listen to all of your music and remember. if you have a consert near me ill go but they say im not allowed to have any contact with my past and that includes you now. why couldnt we have met afterwards... these last few days have ment so much to me aand i cant even tell anyone that i fell for nick walker, it is our little secret we will share for all our life. we will always have the memories of that night you saved me, i will never forget.

nick let his hands drop to his knees and leant his head back against the wall. letting out a sigh he got up and left the hospital. on his way to the lift he bumped into marge "you alright hunnie" she asked him. "tell me marge to believe in love at first sight" he asked. "i sure do love thats how i married my henery". she replied. "im sure you will figure out a way to let her know how you feel if you put your mind to it". he thanked her for her advice and her help then pressed the button for the lift.
